Full Moon Hiking Tours to Slievenamon 2012

The hiking times are between 3 and 4 hours and are considered moderate

Why Slievenamon ?

  • Slievenamon being a standalone mountain means you get a 360o view from the summit.
  • It also has a well defined track that makes it safe to descend by moonlight.

Full Moon Hikes take place once a month (see calendar below).

We generally meet 3 hours before moonrise at the Tourist Office the Quay Waterford

and 2 hours before at the Village Pump Kilsheelan

This gives us time to be on the summit for moonrise and sunset, they occur at the same time!

  • For safety reasons, dogs should not be taken even on a lead (trip hazard)
  • To keep the group manageable please do not show up unannounced
  • Ware appropriate clothing and take along a head torch

Report on Dec Full Moon Hike.

This was by far the highlight of my 2010 hiking calendar. Quite a few people cancelled because of the extreme cold, However we were wrapped up well with down jackets hoods and plenty layers. The temperature in Clonmel  at 2pm was -6c  Conditions on the Summit 721meters  were much cooler down to -20 cWe were greeted with freezing fog towards the top, but just as we reached the summit the fog lifted just like the curtain lifting on a stage to reveal the most amazing views of the final Full Moon of the decade rising in the east

.Hiking by moonlight with the correct clothing and a competent guide is surprisingly easy, especially in Winter when the moonlight is very bright. Torches were hardly needed and even the colour of the heather was visible in the moon light
